Building Bridges with English: Levels 1 and 2
Building Bridges with English: Levels 1 and 2 are two-week, facilitated, online courses that are offered several times a year for ReachGlobal staff and members of EFCA churches. The courses provide training in English teaching strategies and methods, introduce teaching resources, and include a ministry element. Although they are designed for individuals who have little or no previous training in teaching English, they could also be a refresher for those who have teaching experience.
-
Level 1 has been developed for those who are interested in gaining an overview of teaching English as ministry, whether in the U.S. or overseas. This course focuses on general principles of teaching English as ministry. Level 1 is intended for those who want to help in an existing or developing English ministry and as a foundation for those who want to serve as a teacher in an English program. Level 1 is a prerequisite for Level 2.
-
Level 2 is primarily for those interested in teaching English in a program. It focuses on the “how-tos” of teaching English with the goal of developing a teaching activity that can be used in the classroom. The second part of the course focuses on teaching in specific contexts—1) church-based programs, 2) overseas programs and 3) English teaching for refugees in the U.S. Participants must complete Level 1 before enrolling in Level 2.
Levels 1 and 2 are typically offered together during a four-week period.
The main themes of the courses are:
- Understanding language learners
- Strategies and methods for teaching English
- Classroom management
- Sharing the gospel across cultures
- Resources for teaching
- English teaching as a ministry in the U.S. or abroad
Practical application assignments are an important part of the course.
These courses are asynchronous—there is no time when all participants must be online together, but each week new assignments are posted for learners. The learning experience takes place through a variety of formats: audio, video, interactive lessons, quizzes, PowerPoint presentations, readings, online discussions, etc. All required learning materials are provided within the course. Supplementary resources are also provided. Participants generally find that they spend 4-6 hours a week on coursework.
